Can a wireless cable modem interfere with satellite tv?

Kim B asked:

I just had installed a wireless cable modem and it sits within 1 foot of my satellite receiver box. The receiver has since been constantly losing signal, while my other tv in another room with it’s own receiver has been doing fine. I have tried to power down both the modem and the satellite receiver with no luck. Any solutions?

yeah i think it can theoretically. I have a linksys wireless hooked to my cable modem. It is now in a separate room in my house but I did notice that the tv in the living room did loose the signal sometimes. That’s the closest tv to the wireless modem. I do know that there is just so much room in a home but your best solution is to move the wireless modem to another part of your dwellings. If it is possible. By moving it to another room in my house it did make a difference.

Power off the cable modem and power cycle the satellite receiver.

If the satellite receiver now works normally you have found your problem. Move the cable modem well away from the satellite box. Although they operate on different frequencies, any radio transmitter located very close to the satellite receiver can mess things up as it will overload the receiver with spurious signals.

If the satellite receiver still has issues with the cable modem powered down you’ll need to look elsewhere for the problem. If you have separate dishes for each satellite box the first suspect would be a mis-aimed dish. However if you have one dish with dual LNBs and the other system works properly then alignment probably is not the issue. Look for loose or pinched connections somewhere or a problem with the satellite receiver itself.
